Cedar Hill

Cedar Hill is one of the few remaining cruciform dwelling houses existing in Maryland.  It is built of brick and stands 1 ½ stories tall, except the porch tower which is two full stories.

Cedar Hill is significant as an example of a cruciform house built in the 18th century that is typical of 17th century architecture.  The exterior and the floor plan of Cedar Hill correspond to documents describing the house of John Bigger, which was built before 1714.  However, the interior details indicate a date in the second quarter of the 18th century.  The name Cedar Hill dates from the 19th century.  The house and its surrounding lands were originally called Bigger, after its first owner, John Bigger.  The current owner is a descendant of John Bigger. This property was originally patented in 1670 as Mile’s End.

The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, is part of the Maryland Historic Trust, Calvert County Historic District and in an agricultural preservation program.

Nestled on a gentle bluff in Barstow, Calvert County, Maryland this home is within a stones throw of the Patuxent River and presents seasonal water view.  The almost 75 rolling acres provide privacy and spectacular vistas in all directions. Many working fireplaces, wine cellar, gazebo, rose garden, croquet court, barns and outbuildings, including a historic registered corn crib, add to its ambience.  Five bedrooms, beautiful living and sitting rooms, expansive dining room, commercial kitchen, porches are part of the reason it is being enjoyed as a Bed and Breakfast, wedding venue and gathering place for corporate retreats, formal and informal events, wine tastings and receptions.

A caretakers home or additional guest cottage is located near the Equestrian facility on this property, which includes a 7 stall stable, indoor arena and open fields.

Every room, every twist and turn, every step outdoors offers new and unanticipated beauty.  Not often is a property with this much history, economic potential or a place to call home offered . Close proximity to Washington, DC, Baltimore, Md., the Chesapeake Bay and Patuxent River.
